Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems

We’ve all driven down the street and seen the remnants of those unattractive black panels on roof tops of “days gone by” solar hot water heating systems. Many of those older units were intended to heat swimming pools, and the results were mixed.

Modern solar hot water heating systems are nothing like that!

Today’s solar thermal systems are incredibly efficient, cost effective and more attractive.  Consider that an upfront investment starting at around $6,000 to $7,000 will contribute 80% of your households domestic hot water energy needs and up to 30% of your space heating energy, when coupled with an inexpensive hydronic heating coil.    At Clarum Homes we’ve seen these results on nearly every home we build and that’s why we highly recommend this approach.   If there is sun hitting your roof, solar thermal hot water heating is a clear and obvious choice.

In this first photo, you can see that the today’s solar hot water heating panels are very unobtrusive on the roof yet highly efficient.

The second image shows the equipment which is stored in the garage – the solar thermal storage tank, back-up heating source, controllers and expansion tanks.   This tank system, coupled with the collector panels on the rooftop, comprise the entire solar thermal system.
