From security, to lighting, to entertainment, homeownership has never looked smarter. That’s because the intelligent home technology industry is booming with amazing advancements! In the last few years, home automation products have become increasingly sophisticated. And, in 2017, we will see the applications and technology continue to evolve.
Below Clarum looks at some of the latest home automation technology that you may want to consider including in your modern home.
While Smart thermostats have been around since the beginning of the smart home revolution, the 2017 versions are more mature and fine-tuned. Zone-based systems will become more prevalent. This means that in addition to your main thermostat, you can have thermostats in other rooms that directly control heating and cooling on a per-area basis. And, you can use a control panel or your smart phone to control the temperature in every room – from anywhere.
Ok, just how smart can a toilet get? Pretty smart, as it turns out. The newest generation of toilets flush without being touched, sensing how much or how little water is needed. Each toilet has a sensor that can either sense when a body moves toward it and opens the lid and then senses when a body moves away from it and flushes then lowers the lid. Some smart toilets include an integrated foot warmer, UV germ killer, heated seat, deodorizer, bidet, and an illuminated touchscreen panel for music.
Nothing throws your day off like not sleeping well the night before. Luckily, there has been a recent emergence of technology that will monitor and help improve your sleep. For example, sleep trackers sit near your bed for monitoring noise, light, temperature, humidity, air particles. Some trackers even have add-ons that clip to your pillow to monitor your movements. When you wake up, you can access your sleep data on your smart phone – the app will give you recommendations on what you can improve to augment your sleep. Some can also link up to your home’s devices and – once it senses you are asleep – actually turn lights off, turn on a white noise machine, and crank up the air conditioning. You can even program it to sense when you wake up in the morning to start your coffee maker.
Apple, Amazon, Google, and many others are playing a central role in the “Internet of Things, which seeks to connect everyday devices and appliances to each other and their users. You can talk to these devices and ask them to turn on your music, search the Internet, and answer your questions on the weather, traffic, finance, sports, and your tasks for the day. These systems can also sync up with smart home devices so you can enjoy voice-controlled lights, heat, security systems, coffee maker, room vacuum, Wi-Fi, and more.
The good ‘ol refrigerator has gotten a much-needed technology boost. Smart refrigerators are now actively able to control temperature and humidity to maintain freshness longer, as well as keep track of your groceries. You can get alerts on your smart phone when you need to restock an item or something is about to expire. Some models even have cameras inside them so you can check what is on the shelves while you are at the grocery store. The outside panel of smart refrigerators has an electronic interface so you can leave your family messages, check on each other’s schedules, play music, or watch TV while you are making dinner.
