Stunning stairways are quickly becoming a ‘must have’ for the complete modern home. A statement staircase can completely transform the look and atmosphere of a home’s interior and curb appeal.

One way homeowners are creating this “statement” look is with floating staircases.

What is a floating staircase?

By definition, a flight of stairs is said to be “floating” if the space underneath the staircase is open. But there are certain other design elements that have come to be associated with this modern home feature.

For example, traditional stairs are comprised of two perpendicular components—horizontal “treads,” where we place our feet, and vertical “risers,” which go in between the treads. For most floating staircases, the risers are absent, with treads affixed directly to the wall.

This creates the impression that each step is “floating,” free of any framework or suspension. This design may or may not also incorporate hand railings—in some cases omitted to emphasize the modern, minimal, open effect.

Why floating staircases?

The architectural makeup of floating stairs is such that they tend to naturally convey a certain sense of modern flair and uncomplicated form. More than merely a means of daily conveyance, floating staircases are architectural works of art in their own right. They create a more visually spacious atmosphere by eliminating the need to clutter up a room with unsightly frameworks.

Aesthetics aren’t their only contribution, however. Because floating staircases occupy very little space compared to their traditional alternative, they open up otherwise wasted square footage beneath them. They can accommodate a range of sizes and heights, and infuse a light and airy feel to any room.

And they will certainly get people talking—floating staircases often become the conversational centerpiece of any ground floor.

Floating staircase installation: what to consider

If you’re contemplating a floating staircase for your modern home, here are two important considerations:

  • Strength of Construction: If you’re going the tread-only route, be sure that both the treads themselves and their attachment to the wall are equally strong. Since each step will not have the traditional support, this is crucial to ensuring they can bear the necessary weight.
  • Hand Rails: For those with children (or even just a fear of heights), a hand rail might be a good option. While it slightly lessens the minimal effect, it is significantly safer—and in some cases is required based on your state’s building code.

A floating staircase is the perfect blend of modern form and functionally. Consider this growing trend for your new modern home, and lift the ‘style quotient’ of your entire house to a whole new level!
